SUPREME COURT DIRECTS RAJASTHAN GOVERNMENT TO SUSPEND LEASES OF 157 MINES

The Supreme Court directed the Rajasthan Government to suspend the leases of 157 mines in the Aravalli range in the state to check illegal mining in the area.

Special Forest Bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan, Justices S H Kapadia and Aftab Alam, also directed the state government to conduct satellite mapping of 50, 00 square km area in the Aravalli range in Jaipur.

The apex court strongly disapproved the illegal activities of the mining mafia, which was causing a huge loss to the state exchequer besides causing heavy damage to the environment.

The Supreme Court issued the order following media exposure and when the truth of illegal mining was brought to the notice of the court.

The ban will continue till further order.
