THE Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008 has become operational ensuring further tightening of the procedure and safeguards for preventing cyber crimes. Several sections of the IT Act were amended, including provisions relating to procedure and safeguards for interception, monitoring and decryption of information, safeguards for blocking access of information by public and monitoring and collection traffic data.
The Act also mentions the appointment of Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (ICERT), which will look into matters relating to computer security and circumstances arising from cyber attacks.
The IT Act was enacted in the year 2000 to electronic transactions, provide legal recognition for e-commerce and e-transactions, facilitate e-governance, prevent computer based crimes and ensure security practices and procedures in the context of widest possible use of information technology world-wide.
