Supreme Court: Death Penalty awarded to Convicts in Nirbhaya Gangrape Case

Today, the Supreme Court has upheld the Death penalty of convicts in Nirbhaya Gang Rape and Death Case. The three judge bench comprising of Justice Dipak Misra, Justice R Banumathi and Justice Ashok Bhushan has dismissed the appeal which is passed against the order of the Delhi High Court which has confirmed the capital punishment awarded to culprits by the trial Court in 2013.

The Bench while delivering the judgment, stated that the four of the men held guilty of raping and torturing a 23-year-old medical student on a moving bus in Delhi nearly five years ago will hang and described the incident as a "story of a different world". Further, the court also referred to the dying declaration of the young woman and said the "brutal and demonic" crime had been proved beyond doubt.
