President Pranab Mukherjee administers oath to Justice Khehar as the 44th Chief Justice of India
In a swearing in ceremony at the Rashtrapathi Bhavan in New Delhi, President Pranab Mukherjee administered the oath of office to Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar as the 44th Chief Justice of India. A circular was issued on the 19th of December, 2016 by President Mukherjee notifying the appointment of Justice Khehar as the successor to the previous Chief Justice Thakur.
Justice Khehar was designated as the judge to the Apex court on 13th September 2011.As a judge of the apex court; Justice Khehar played an important role in a number of landmark rulings such as the National Judicial Appointments Commission Act (NJAC) terming it as ‘unconstitutional’. Justice Khehar also played an integral role as a member of the Inquiry Committee set up for judges that was set up to look into the grounds raised for the dismissal of Justice P.D. Dinakaran, Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.
Justice Khehar’s tenure as the Chief Justice of India would end on the 4th of August, 2017.
