The Supreme Court, today, upheld the decision of Intellectual Property Appellate Board on the issue that the trademark by the name of ‘Ramayana’ cannot be registered as a trademark. The Apex Court in its verdict stated that the names of the holy or religious book cannot be registered as a trademark for goods or services with a view that the name ‘Ramayana’ is considered to be the religious book of the Hindu which holds the religious sentiments among the Hindus. The Apex Court has further decided that any prefix or suffix to the word ‘Ramayana’ may lose its significance and therefore can be allowed for registration as a trademark.
