The government has approved setting up of six special economic zones (SEZs), including three bio-technology zones. It also cleared seven requests for grant of co-developer status. Developers that got the green signal for their zones include Shantha Biotechnics, Indus Gene Expressions and Suchirindia Infrastructure for setting up bio-tech zones in Andhra Pradesh, Cochin International Airport for setting up a air-port based SEZ in Kerala, Lanco Solar for a solar SEZ in Chattisgarh and Sterlite for setting up a zone in Tamil Nadu. A total of 574 proposals have been approved for setting up of SEZs so far of which 353 have been notified.
