DELHI HIGH COURT NOTICE TO CBI IN UPHAAR CASE
The Delhi High Court today issued a notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to respond to an appeal by builder Sushil Ansal challenging his two-year sentence in the Uphaar cinema hall fire case.
Hearing the arguments of R K Naseem representing Sushil Ansal, Justice S N Dhingra also ordered a notice to the Association of Victims of Uphaar Tragedy (AVUT), which represents the families of the victims. Both the CBI and the AVUT are to reply by January 2.
Sushil Ansal had approached the High Court yesterday challenging the sentence awarded by a lower court.
On November 23, Sushil Ansal and Gopal Ansal were awarded two-year jail sentences for the fire tragedy. They were however, immediately granted bail.
The tragedy had claimed 59 lives on June 13, 1997.
