PRINT REFRIGERATOR MRP ON PACKAGE: SUPREME COURT

The Supreme Court has ruled that the MRP of refrigerators is required to be printed on the packages. Refrigerators are a packaged commodity and hence the printing of its MRP is a must as per existing rule, said the apex court. It dismissed the plea of Whirlpool which had said that refrigerators were not packaged commodity and so there was no compulsion to have MRP on its packages. A bench comprising Justices Ashok Bhan, Justices H S Bedi and Justices V S Sirpurkar said refrigerators would be covered by the provisions of SWM (standards of weights and measures) Act, 1976 and SWM (Packaged Commodity) Rules, 1977 and it would be imperative that the MRP is printed in terms of Rule 6.
