SENSITIVE ITEM IMPORTS UP 0.9% IN APRIL-JULY
Imports of the 350-odd sensitive items, monitored on a regular basis by the commerce department, increased by 0.9% in the first four months of 2007-08 to Rs 6,356 crore from Rs 6,301 crore in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal. Imports of automobiles, cotton & silk, rubber and alcoholic beverages went up during the period while fruit & vegetables, marble & granite, tea & coffee and milk & milk products showed a decline.
Imports of automobiles registered a 77.3% increase to Rs 350.52 crore during April-July 2007 compared to Rs 197.75 crore in the year-ago period. Alcoholic beverages registered a 32.8% increase in imports to Rs 41.78 crore (Rs 31.45 crore).
Milk and milk products experienced a 65.1% decline in imports to Rs 6.33 crore (Rs 18.12 crore). Imports of products manufactured by SSIs declined by 16.2% to Rs 216.35 crore during the period.
Gross imports of all commodities during in the first four months of this fiscal was Rs 2, 97,081 crore compared to Rs 2, 53,546 crore during the comparable period last year. Import of sensitive items constituted 2.5% and 2.1% of the gross imports during the previous year and the current year, respectively.
