TATA STEEL BUYS RIGHTS TO NIPPON WELDING TECHNOLOGY

TATA Steel has signed an agreement with a Nippon Steel arm for transfer of welding technology. As part of this, Nippon Steel Hardfacing Co's welding technology will now be available to Tata Steel for surface conditioning of steel rolls. These rolls are used in various stages during steelmaking processes like continuous casting and continuous hot strip rolling. This will be used to enhance resistance to wear, corrosion and thermal shock of steel.

The agreement provides for exchange of professionals between the two companies, which include sending Tata Steel personnel to Japan and NSH specialists to Jamshedpur for training, experience and supply of special welding equipment and consumables.

Post acquisition of Corus, Tata Steel has emerged the sixth largest steel producer globally. It is expanding its activities in India and in Europe, Asia and other geographies.

The company has also decided to focus on expanding its product line and move towards higher-grade products with the introduction of advanced production facilities.

The latest alliance is in line with Nippon Steel's overseas strategy and would help in expanding its services in overseas markets. NSH already supplies technology and products to steelmakers of Korea, China, Taiwan, Brazil, the US and Europe. The agreement was signed by H M Nerurkar, chief operating officer, Tata Steel and Yasuo Hidaka, NSH’s director and president.

Responding to Tata Steel's invitation, NSH assessed the opportunities in hardfacing technology in the company's Jamshedpur Works and observed there was a potential of enhancing the life of many components used in LD Shops, hot strip mill, cold rolling mill, coke plant, sinter plants, blast furnaces and raw material handling at Jamshedpur and in the company’s mines.
