SUPREME COURT RULES IN FAVOUR OF TATA POWER
The Supreme Court has set aside Reliance Energy’s claim that its competitor Tata Power cannot supply electricity to small retail consumers in Mumbai.
A bench headed by justice Altamas Kabir dismissed Reliance Energy’s contention that Tata Power had the licence to supply power only to bulk customers. The apex court’s ruling will allow Tata Power to supply electricity to all categories of consumers, including small consumers with consumption of 1,000 kVA and less and also to industrial consumers.
“The honourable Supreme Court allowed the appeal filed by Tata Power and set aside the orders of MERC (Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission) and the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity in the licence matter,” said a Tata Power spokesperson.
Tata Power had filed an appeal in the Supreme Court, contesting the appellate tribunal’s order passed on May 22, 2006 that Tata Power could only supply power to bulk licencees.
