BHEL BAGS RS 1, 475-CR THERMAL POWER PROJECT

GOVERNMENT-owned power equipment maker Bharat Heavy Electricals (Bhel) bagged a Rs 1,475-crore order for a 600 mw thermal power plant in Chattisgarh. Bhel will supply the main plant package for the greenfield power project.

"The order for the greenfield power project, located in Raigarh district, has been placed on Bhel by Korba West Power Company (KWPCL) reflecting the customer's confidence in the company's technological excellence and capability in executing projects of this magnitude," an official statement said.

According to the contract, Bhel's services will include design, engineering, manufacture, supply, erection and commissioning of steam turbine, generator, boiler, associated auxiliaries and state-ofthe-art controls & instrumentation for the 600 mw thermal power plant.

Bhel has fully established state-of-theart technology for manufacturing thermal sets up to 1,000 mw rating suited to Indian conditions using Indian as well as imported coal, the statement said. The company has also introduced new rating thermal sets of 270 mw, 525 mw and 600 mw to meet customer demand.

Significantly, while Bhel bagged orders worth Rs 44,407 crore in its power sector business segment in 2008-09, out of this over Rs 13,000 crore came from major private sector companies such as Jindal Power, Jaiprakash Power Ventures, GVK Power, Hindalco, HPCL Mittal Energy, Adani Power and Tatas, the statement said.

The orders bagged by the company in 2008-09 includes the first-ever orders for 800 mw supercritical boilers, 660 mw supercritical turbine generator sets and largest number of orders for 8 sets of 600 mw.

BHEL currently manufactures equipments that can generate 10,000 mw power capacity and is further augmenting this capacity to 15,000 mw per annum by December 2009. The company is planning to further increase its manufacturing capacity to 20,000 mw by 2011-12.
