DELHI HC REFUSES
TO BAN NIMESULIDE
The Delhi High Court, disposed off a PIL
seeking a ban on the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug
nimesulide. The court's decision would bring relief not only
to the manufacturers of various formulations of nimesulide,
a hugely popular drug of companies like Dr. Reddy's Laboratories
and Panacea Biotec, but also to the government's technical
resources in the field. Source said while disposing off PIL,
the court restricted itself to the legal aspects of the matter
and not the technical questions. For the technical bit, it
relied on the drug authorities. "I understand that the
court has taken a view that it has been satisfied with the
measures taken by the government regarding nimesulide with
regard to public safety, "DCGI Ashwini Kumar said. The
European Medical Evaluation Agency has issue an advisory to
the health authorities of Finland, where the drug was banned,
that drug may be continued for use.
