SALEM STEEL BAGS RS 117-CR ORDER FROM KOLKATA MINT
SALEM Steel Plant (SSP) has bagged a Rs 117-crore order for supplying 11,300 tonnes of ferritic stainless steel strips to the government's mint in Kolkata. The strips, which are used for minting coins, will be supplied in grade 430 in two widths and thickness, as specified by the mint. SSP produces both coin blanks and stainless steel coils/strips for coinage purposes. During April to December of the current financial year, stainless steel production by SSP touched 64,000 tonnes - an increase of 30 % over the corresponding period last year.
SAIL is expanding SSP's production capacity at an estimated cost of Rs 1,553 crore as part of its own corporate plan for 2010. The steel making facility will have the capacity to produce 1,80,000 tonnes of stainless steel slabs per annum while the coldrolling capacity would increase from the present 35,826 tonnes to 1,46,000 tonnes per annum, according to a company source.
