SUPREME COURT NOTICE ON TOBACCO WARNINGS
In a move that may make it mandatory for companies to specify basic contents of cigarettes and to print pictorial warning on packets, the Supreme Court issued notices to the Centre and tobacco firms. A bench headed by Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan also sought explanation why categorisation of cigarettes should not to be banned.
The Apex court issued notices on a plea seeking implantation of the Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products (Packaging and Labelling) Rules 2006 in its letter and spirit. The court sought replies from the ministry of health and family welfare, ITC, Godfrey Philips India, Kothari Products, Dhariwal Industries, New Tobacco Co, Vazir Sultan Tobacco Industries, Zafrani Zarda and Pan Masala Manufacturers' Association, Tobacco Institute of India, All India Pan Masala & Tobacco Manufacturers Association and All India Bidi Industry Federation.
