CBI SUBMITS RIZWANUR PROBE REPORT TO CALCUTTA HIGH COURT
The CBI submitted its report on the investigation into the death of computer graphics designer Rizwanur Rehman to the Calcutta High Court. The agency submitted the report in a sealed cover to Justice Dipankar Dutta, who adjourned the matter for further hearing.
Rizwanur died under mysterious circumstances after his marriage to Priyanka, whose father is an affluent businessman in Kolkata. The two had got married under the Special Marriage Act on August 18, and Rizwanur's body was found lying near a railway track in Kolkata on September 21.
The CBI was handed the case by the Kolkata High Court on October 16 and asked to submit a report within two months.
During the course of the preliminary investigation, the agency had questioned Priyanka Todi and her family members. The agency had also questioned police officials who were also accused of putting pressure on Rizwanur to stay away from his wife. Rizwanur and Priyanka were allegedly summoned to the Kolkata police headquarters at Lalbazar thrice. The third time round, she returned to her father's home after her uncle gave a written assurance that she would return to Rizwanur after a week. However, Priyanka did not return, and Rizwanur's body was found near the railway tracks. The CBI also put Priyanka's uncle Pradeep Todi and a relative of Rizwanur's through a lie detector test.
On the basis of scientific and circumstantial evidence unearthed during investigations, the investigating agency believes that Rizwanur committed suicide and that Priyanka Todi's family abetted the suicide. The agency has retrieved a suicide note from a computer that was recovered from Rizwanur's maternal aunt, who had deleted the letter after his death on September 21. Rizwanur has written in the note that the Todis did not allow him to meet his wife Priyanka.
The letter, the CBI believes, shows the computer designer's state of mind after his separation from his wife. The investigating agency had initially registered a murder case against Priyanka Todi's father Ashok Todi and others under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.
