DELHI TAX COLLECTION RISES 13%
Delhi's revenue collection grew by 13% in the first eight months (April-November, 2007-08) of the current fiscal to Rs 7,656 crore compared to Rs 6,791 crore in the corresponding period previous fiscal.
Value added tax (VAT) collections grew by 11% to Rs 5,468 crore in the period under review against Rs 4,923 crore in the corresponding periord last year.
Entertainment, luxury and vehicle taxes, however witnessed robust growth.
Delhi finance minister A K Walia attributed this growth to streamlined procedures, people friendly policies, increased efficiency in tax collection, and plugging of loopholes in the system.
State Excise went up by 13% to Rs 816 crore against Rs 721.70 crore in a corresponding periord last year. The entertainment tax registered a growth of 29% to Rs 38 crore against Rs 29 crore in the corresponding period last year. The tax collection from vehicles, stamps & registration fees and luxury tax went up by 24% (Rs 305 cr), 22%(Rs 822 cr) and 14% (Rs 222 cr), respectively, according to an official statement. The collection of other taxes and duties on commodities and services registered a growth of 16.37% to Rs.264 crore up to November, 2007 against Rs.227 crore during last year.
