RIZWAN NOT MURDERED BUT DRIVEN TO SUICIDE: CBI
The CBI has concluded that graphics designer Rizwanur Rehman committed suicide but though his wife's family did abet his decision to end life. The central investigating agency, working on the direction of the Calcutta High Court, is to submit a report on its findings next week.
Sources said, the CBI in its three-month-long investigation, has come to the conclusion that Rehman, who was found dead near railway tracks in Kolkata on September 21, was not murdered but his wife's family had driven him into suicide, and the agency will try to establish it through scientific and circumstantial evidence. The CBI has also retrieved a suicide note from a computer recovered from Rehman's maternal aunt, who had deleted the electronic document after Rizwanur's death on September 21.
Through the letter, the CBI attempted to establish the 30-year-old graphic designer's state of mind. The agency believes that separation from his wife and pressure tactics employed by the Todis drove him to suicide. Rizwanur reportedly wrote in the note that the Todis did not allow him to meet his wife Priyanka.
The agency is also likely to recommend action against two senior police officials who allegedly used pressure tactics to keep Rehman away from his wife. The investigating agency had registered a murder case against Priyanka Todi's father businessman Ashok Todi and others under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. The charge against Priyanka's family members is now likely to be changed to abetment of suicide which carries a maximum penalty of imprisonment up to 10 years.
After the furore surrounding the suicide, the Calcutta High Court had asked the CBI investigate the case. The agency during investigation questioned Priyanka Todi and her family members, besides the police officials who were accused of putting pressure on Rizwanur to stay away from his wife. Priyanka's uncle Pradeep Todi and a relative of Rizwanur's were also put under a lie detector test.
Rizwanur had died under mysterious circumstances after his marriage to Priyanka, whose father is an affluent businessman in Kolkata. The two had got married under the Special Marriage Act on August 18.
